Romans 1:20—For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made so that men are without excuse.
Author of Origins of Life, theoretical physicist Freeman J. Dyson says, “As we look out into the universe and identify the many accidents of physics and astronomy that have worked to our benefit, it almost seems as if the universe must in some sense have known that we were coming.” Hmm. It’s not the universe that knew we were coming!
Naturalism is “The system of thought holding that all phenomena can be explained in terms of natural causes and laws without attributing moral, spiritual, or supernatural significance to them.” (The American Heritage Dictionary) Naturalists believe that the world evolved on its own and reject the notion that a designing God is responsible for life. By holding to this view they set aside powerful evidence that begs a Designer. Burrowing beneath their intellect, is the real issue the worship of chance or wills opposed to the allowance of an omnipotent Creator?
For anyone embracing the notion that we are just finely-evolved creatures bereft of a Creator, sin is essentially a non-issue. The proliferation of naturalistic thought undermines the importance of absolutes for life is devoid of supernatural meaning. Live as you please for when you die, you die! But in Genesis, we discover there is a Lord Who formed us from the dust of the ground with no intention that we would end up forever dust in the wind. He calls us to live holy lives in accordance with His divine will. If we need evidence that He exists, we need only examine what is around us. If the beauty of nature does not impress us, mathematics and science certainly provide compelling proof for design and therefore, a Designer.
Dr. Walter Bradley in “The Designed ‘Just So’ Universe” writes:
There are certain universal constants that are an essential part of our mathematical description of the universe. A partial list is found in Table 2 and includes Planck’s constant “h”, the speed of light “c”, the gravity force constant “G”, the mass of the proton, electron, and neutron, the unit charge for the electron or proton, and the weak force, strong nuclear force and electromagnetic coupling constants, and Boltzmann’s constant, k . . . This is only an illustrative but not exhaustive list of examples of cosmic coincidences that clearly demonstrate that the four forces in nature have been very carefully scaled to give a universe that provides long-term sources of energy and a variety of atomic building blocks which are necessary for life.
Dr. Bradley’s article goes on to share how finely-tuned and delicately established each force of nature is shaped to allow for life. He offers faith-affirming evidence for design. I encourage you to read his article and the writings of other scientists shared at www.origins.org. The Apostle Peter challenges us, “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 Peter
