CONSCIENCE

1 Timothy 1:5—The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

I was spending time with the Lord not long ago when the thought came to my mind, don’t watch the Odyssey tonight. Instantly a battle commenced. Where did that thought come from? Why shouldn’t I watch the Odyssey? There is nothing wrong . . . All day long I rationalized against that "random" thought. Deep inside I knew the gentle unmistakable voice of the Holy Spirit was at work. I watched the Odyssey. There was nothing wrong with what I saw. But a friend called to say a relative had died. She was getting ready to go on a trip and wanted to let me know and see what work needed to be completed before she left. I did not give her the attention she deserved because the Odyssey was about to begin. Had I listened to the small message I would have been ready for the hurting voice. God knew. The test of conscience is not always measured by whether what I do is right or wrong but rather by my willingness to obey.

Inspiration

God always educates us down to the scruple. Is my ear so keen to hear the tiniest whisper of the Spirit that I know what I should do? . . . He does not come with a voice like thunder; His voice is so gentle that it is easy to ignore it. The one thing that keeps the conscience sensitive to Him is the continual habit of being open to God on the inside.—Oswald Chambers in My Utmost For His Highest
