APPEARANCE

Matthew 23:12—Whoever honors himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be honored.

The need to be recognized often orients us down a path perforated with traps. For example, if my primary motivation is to look good in front of others, I will be tempted to exaggerate facts in my favor. I may withhold information that colors me in an unfavorable light. I may spend more time posturing and posing when I should be concerned with more important matters like attending to the needs of others. Jesus taught about pride after observing religious leaders. He noted that the pursuit to look spiritual had become a greater priority than serving God. There is no reward in heaven for contrived applause on earth. Take the courageous step of setting aside ego and instead serve God and people. True reward will follow!
