It’s not hard to feel inadequate. In the middle of an intersection I zeroed in on what John was asking me. I didn’t see the silver Nissan approaching from the right. He couldn’t swerve in time or stop to avoid me. Bang!!! In one unceremonious crunch our Plymouth Voyager was totaled. With one lapse of attention I joined the other side—the team of drivers in accidents because they were talking on cell phones. The best intentions don’t erase crumpled metal. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the other car suffered only minor damage.
Meditation
Psalm 106:1,2—Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever. Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord or fully declare His praise?
When the Bible says God is good, it’s easy to gloss over that word “good.” Yet, in reality His goodness is indescribable. His love never ends! His works are so fantastic that no one can fully fathom, let alone give Him the glory He is truly due. God is so awesome that our inadequacy is rendered irrelevant by His sufficiency.
Without God I would have spent days beating myself up for a careless accident. I would have sought ways to justify my negligence. I would have lain awake at night replaying the scene. With God I could recognize my fault and minister to the other young man who suffered his first accident. I could sit in the parking lot of Home Depot and praise God for His love and thank Him that He is my sufficiency.
Without God I would have despaired over the loss of our minivan. With God I have no reason to worry because He is my faithful Provider. It is immensely satisfying to praise God when circumstances scream for cursing. Experiencing joy during times of adversity confirms what a huge difference God makes in our lives.
Contrary to what the world teaches, I don’t need to be my own man. I need to be God’s man. The former leads to pride and eventual hopelessness. The latter brings purpose and peace. “Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord or fully declare His praise?” I can’t. I’m inadequate—flawed and incapable of knowing all God does. But I can experience incredible worship for a Father Who makes all the difference in the world. And you can do the same. No matter what you are going through right now God’s goodness is sufficient for you. Believe it! Live, and if necessary, die in it. Either way, He will see you through if your trust is in Him; something to think about . . . in reveration.
