MISSIONARIES

Acts 13:2,3—While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

How radical are you willing to be when it comes to supporting missionaries? It’s nice to have an annual missions week in the church. It feels good to send a check periodically to those laboring overseas. But do you honestly understand what those you know as missionaries experience on a daily basis? Do you know what it means to leave your home country and live in a strange culture among people who speak a foreign language, eat different foods, and relate to one another with a different set of mores? Do you know what it is like to be deeply homesick, constantly vulnerable and very inadequate?

Isn’t love what makes the body of Christ unique in the world? Let’s stoke the love that should flow in our hearts for one another. May I suggest you pray about exercising your love to those out on the frontlines of ministry! First, pray about planning a trip to spend a week or two with a missionary you know. Sacrificially begin setting aside the money you will need. Don’t fall victim to the “can’t syndrome.” God can easily provide you the funds to go if you are willing. I suspect He would be immensely pleased you would even do such a thing. If you have children, take them with you. They will receive a greater education than a week in school could ever provide.

Second, get on the phone (check the time zone difference first J), and call a missionary you know. Ask how they are “really” doing and give them time to “really” respond. Tell them that you love them and are proud of what they are doing for the Kingdom. Be an encourager in Jesus’ name! Your actions might just refresh a worn-out saint. You may bring tears of joy to a missionary who was beginning to wonder if God really cared. You might build a friendship that could change your own life. You will model caring! You will honor the Lord by serving those who serve!

If you don’t know any missionaries, or if your church has no missionaries, consider calling us at 503 620-4081. We will joyfully enable you to sponsor a native missionary. Be a kingdom builder!

Inspiration

Unless the missionary is based on a right relationship to God, he will fizzle out in the passing of the years and become a negligible quantity from God’s standpoint. The men and women who stand absolutely true to God’s ideal are the ones who are telling for God. God has staked His honor on the work of Jesus Christ in the souls of those whom He has saved, and sanctified and sent.—Oswald Chambers in So Send I You
