Psalm
1 Thessalonians 5:19—Do not put out the Spirit’s fire.
This is the time of year I love most—the fall. The air is crisp and invigorating. The leaves on my maple trees reveal the Creator’s paintbrush at work by their dazzling array of colors. The house in the morning is cold. The darkness outside combined with the comforter’s siren song make getting out of bed a challenge for the hardiest of souls.
It is time to consider replacing our ancient furnace. This might be the winter it dies in the middle of some wretched ice storm. It is also a good time to examine my own center of spiritual heat—my heart. Am I in love with God? Is my life and work fueled by the faith that comes through a relationship of love with the Lord and His word?
What’s your thermostat set on? Are you maintaining a consistent relationship with your Heavenly Father or is it time for a tune-up? Do you know the source of your strength or has your pilot light died? Are you spending time in prayer and studying the Bible to grow stronger in fellowship with your forever Friend? Or, are your pipes clogged with the tabescent grind of busyness? If the latter is true will you join me in asking the One Who always listens, this request?
O God! Give me a passion to burn through the coldest of nights when the wind steals my breath and dark assaults light. Fire my heart with the flame of Your Spirit. Blow in my soul brighter and hotter the love that You give to Your sons and Your daughters. Like crackling logs that sing in the fireplace, let my life radiate the joy of Your grace. Amen
