POSITION

The uniform can be a source of great inspiration or it can be the veneer of tyranny it all depends on the heart of the one clothed. There is a man who cannot advance in his job. His ability to move up in his organization is stifled by the hands of a Napoleon- pretender, one with an insecurity complex too radioactive to handle. Perhaps you know the type?

Few things are more frustrating in life then serving a boss who derives his or her authority solely on position. “I outrank you”, is this pseudo-leader’s mantra, therefore “you must do whatever I tell you.” “I resent you,” is the follower’s unspoken feeling, therefore, “I will only do what I have to do and nothing more.” In this miserable environment it is very hard to accept, let alone understand, the sovereignty of God.

If you work for a prima donna, here are some helpful suggestions. First, understand that you are dealing with an insecure and unhappy person. Very few people really want to be jerks. Instead of focusing on what this person does to annoy you, consider asking God to reveal to you the source of the problem. If the Holy Spirit gives you insight, you will have a powerful means to pray for the grief-giver. Second, respond whenever possible, with kindness. Jesus taught His followers that God “ . . . is kind to the ungrateful and wicked (Luke 6:35). His kindness to the undeserving should inspire us! Third, recognize that God may be working on your character by the character you’re working for. Often we learn what not to do by observing firsthand what others are improperly doing. And in the belly of adversity, we learn much about our own ability to trust God through trying times and circumstances.

If you are guilty of hurting your employees via the position you hold, consider asking God to identify the insecurity which causes you to rely on your rank or title instead of on Him. Don’t justify your behavior by an “I know what’s best for these wimps” attitude. Such thinking reveals pride and brings no glory to the Father you represent. Confess your failure to trust Him! Renounce your need to control by coercion. Win the hearts of those around you by practicing servant-leadership! Be devoted to God not to your authority!
