EXPECTANCY

Psalm 5:3—In the morning, O Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation.

Growing up, my Dad often had to travel. The day he would arrive home was always a special event. Often we would make cool posters and cards for him—welcoming him home. Not only were we glad to see him safely returned, we also knew he would have a surprise for us. In my study today are many carvings, especially of elephants Dad brought home from different countries. They remind me of my father’s love.

Now as an adult, I understand how much pleasure it gave Dad to see the look on our faces whenever he returned. When I come home from trips, my three kids can’t wait to greet me and see what little treasures I have carried home for them. Often the walls are decorated with wonderful banners they made that joyfully express their affection. They remind me of my Father’s love.

If as a dad I long to be with my children and gain pleasure in demonstrating my love to them, imagine what my Heavenly Father feels like! How He must enjoy surprising His children with His perfect touch. What pleasure it must give God when we get up eager to be in His presence, to pour out our hearts to Him. Will He reveal a special truth from His word? Will He bring someone into our lives today with just the right message of encouragement? Will He heal us of some malady or bring relief from much suffering? Will He send chills down our spine as we reach out our hands to embrace Him?

When’s the last time you made a poster for God? May I encourage you to eagerly seek Him this week with a twitterpated heart and an anticipative mind! Share how much He means to you by devoting time to Him in meaningful worship. Bring Him your requests. Look forward to what special blessings He will unpack for you. Our creative Creator is profoundly incredible in surprising us with His love. So be expectant, like Moses who wrote, "Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days." (Psalms 90:14)

When we are rightly related to God, life is full of spontaneous, joyful uncertainty and expectancy—we do not know what God is going to do next; and He packs our lives with surprises all the time.—Oswald Chambers in So Send I You
