HOPE

Isaiah 40:31—But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

As a sophomore in high school, Isaiah 40:31 became my favorite verse for cross-country. There is nothing quite like running up mountainous terrain in the humidity and heat of the Philippines. My hope was definitely that the Lord would provide me renewed strength! I look back on those days with fond memories. God was teaching me lessons I would need for life which in many ways is like a cross-country race. It is full of ups and downs. Just when it feels good to coast a hill looms ahead. At the point of sheer exhaustion peaks give way to plains and the weary spirit rejoices.

Wednesday night a saint fell. My special friend, Georgia Drake, tripped and broke her femur despite the presence of a steel rod and an artificial hip. Osteoporoses leaves her susceptible to serious injury. Arthritis has turned her race into a daily battle with affliction. If her strength resided in her Greek ancestral roots even her gutsy spirit would cave in to the merciless attacks of pain. But her hope is in Jesus. Not even a hospital bed can rob her of the power to walk and not be faint. Her gait is not measured by gravity because her soul is not tethered to dirt. She soars where eagles can only dream of flying. She’s a remarkable woman who wears the robe of grace.

Do you know how wonderful it is to hope? Life for the follower of Christ, is a journey in joy. Do accidents occur? Certainly! Do we always get what we want? No! Can life be unfair? Yes! So what! "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38,39)

Are you discouraged? Take heart—have hope. Get back in the race! Run in the strength of Jesus. God loves you so much He gave you your very own Savior! That’s reason to celebrate in reveration . . .
